My busy weekend continued on Sunday, September 26 when Courtney, Jeff and I decided that the day was perfect for The State Fair of Virginia. It was Jeff's first visit to the fair so this commemorative photo just had to be taken. Although he and Courtney did not actually eat that huge cotton candy, we did see some for sale that were almost that big! 
Our favorite part of any fair is the agricultural area, and this one did not disappoint. Our first stop was the Young Farmer's Pavilion where many animals and their young are on display. This year the pavilion featured a "Maternity Ward" where many very pregnant cows and several brand new calves were on display. This little fellow had JUST been born, and he was still totally wet and in need of his mother's drying tongue. We watched him wobble to his feet just after this photo was taken!
From there we wandered over to the Goat Pavilions where various forms of judging were going on. Here 15-18 year old 4H members are showing off their prize meat goats.
We also watched a dairy goat judging contest and a lumberjack competition before heading off to the main portion of the fair. We stopped for a beer and a bit of Elvis! A State Fair would not be a State Fair without an Elvis impersonator!
Loved the back up girls, the crowd and the fact that after this performance "Elvis" was swamped with autograph seekers.
But, the piece de resistance of the day was the great Piglet Race!!!
Poor little guys have no idea that one day they will end up being served at one of these fine eating establishments....
serving the kind of food that should be forbidden...ha, ha...but yet is beloved by the majority of the American public! No, Jeff did not succumb to this temptation!

No, Jeff did not succumb to this temptation!We opted out of fair food, went home for wine, goat cheese and crackers and then later headed to Edo Squid for an absolutely delicious dinner of Grilled Sardines and Penne alle Viole, Richmond Style! Now that is what we call fine food!
